Aromatherapy Awareness Week: A Day of Care and Connection at Little Cola Theatre

To mark Aromatherapy Awareness Week 2026, the IFA School Yuan Liu Institute organised a meaningful community outreach initiative at Little Cola Theatre, bringing together a group of aromatherapists from various training backgrounds. A total of 15 aromatherapists volunteered their time and expertise, providing services for 40 parents and children from Little Cola Theatre. The aim of the event was to share the benefits of aromatherapy with children with disabilities and their families, while offering a space of care, relaxation, and emotional support. What unfolded over the course of the day became a deeply moving exchange of giving and receiving, reflecting the true spirit of aromatherapy in practice.

Aromatherapy Brings Comfort, Healing and Love to Everyone Involved

This weekend, a group of aromatherapists from various training backgrounds visited Little Cola Theatre to provide relaxation and wellness services for children with disabilities and their families.

The children in the theatre group include those with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays, ADHD, and the rare genetic condition known as Cri-du-chat syndrome. For many of the aromatherapists, this was their first experience participating in a volunteer service of this kind. They arrived hoping to give, but soon discovered that they themselves were the ones being healed.

One child with high sensory sensitivity was initially fearful of unfamiliar touch and interaction. The aromatherapist gently introduced essential oils through guided scent exploration, helping the child gradually open up their senses. This was followed by a soft hand massage to build trust and comfort. Through patient interaction and role reversal, the child eventually relaxed and enjoyed the experience, while the parent was delighted to see their child feeling safe, engaged, and happy.

Another child with Cri-du-chat syndrome and their grandmother both suffered from severe neck and shoulder tension. Aromatherapy acupoint techniques combined with gentle massage helped them experience comfort and relaxation they had not felt in a long time.

For many of the children and parents, this was their first experience with aromatherapy. After the sessions, they expressed how relaxed and comfortable they felt. Some children repeatedly said, “I’m so sleepy now,” while smiling from ear to ear.

Many newly certified IFA aromatherapists were providing services to people they had never met before for the very first time. Yet throughout this experience, they found themselves deeply moved and inspired. After countless hours of studying, memorising, practicing, and preparing for their certification, they had thought they were simply learning a professional skill. However, when they witnessed the relaxed smiles of the children and the heartfelt gratitude in the eyes of their parents, they realized that all of their hard work could be transformed into a source of comfort and support for others. In that moment, they understood that aromatherapy is more than a profession — it is a gift that allows them to accompany, care for, and bring healing to the lives of those around them.

The event concluded with the children of Little Cola Theatre performing the sign-language song, “Thank You, Grateful for You.” Their heartfelt gestures and sincere expressions created a touching finale, bringing this beautiful day of love and connection to a perfect close.

Although this event was organized as part of Aromatherapy Awareness Week, it left something far more lasting—a seed planted in the hearts of the participating aromatherapists. Inspired by this meaningful experience, many expressed their hope to continue serving and sharing the healing power of aromatherapy with more families in the future.
