The International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA) is delighted to celebrate its 41st Birthday on 20 October 2026, marking more than four decades of advancing professional aromatherapy, promoting excellence in education, and championing the safe and effective use of essential oils around the world.

Since its foundation in 1985, the IFA has played a pivotal role in shaping the aromatherapy profession, establishing educational standards, supporting practitioners, funding research, and helping to integrate aromatherapy into healthcare settings. As the organisation celebrates this significant milestone, it reflects on an extraordinary journey built upon dedication, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving wellbeing through aromatherapy.

The anniversary provides an opportunity to recognise the countless members, volunteers, educators, researchers, and supporters whose passion and commitment have helped make the IFA the respected professional body it is today.

Reflecting on the organisation's early beginnings, IFA founder member Patricia Davis once described the atmosphere surrounding the Federation's establishment as “a time of enthusiasm, excitement, idealism and a sense of pioneering.” She also reminded us that “before the IFA’s inception, aromatherists had no organisation or representation at all.”

Over the past 41 years, the IFA has achieved many significant milestones, including:

  • Establishing and maintaining internationally recognised standards for aromatherapy education and professional practice.
  • Supporting the integration of aromatherapy within healthcare environments, including NHS settings.
  • Achieving accreditation through the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), helping to promote public confidence and practitioner accountability.
  • Funding and supporting research to strengthen the evidence base for aromatherapy.
  • Delivering numerous charitable and community initiatives that have improved wellbeing for people across the UK and beyond.
  • Promoting the safe, ethical, and responsible use of essential oils through ongoing professional development and public education.

The IFA's work has positively impacted countless individuals who have benefited from aromatherapy as a complementary approach to health and wellbeing. Through the dedication of its members and volunteers, the Federation has remained at the forefront of the profession while preserving the values upon which it was founded.

As the IFA celebrates its 41st birthday, it also looks firmly to the future. The organisation remains committed to supporting the next generation of aromatherapists, advancing research, strengthening professional standards, and increasing awareness of the benefits of aromatherapy within modern healthcare and wellness settings.

This anniversary is not only a celebration of past achievements but also an opportunity to highlight the importance of belonging to a professional body that promotes best practice, continuing education, and public safety.

The IFA extends its sincere gratitude to every member, volunteer, educator, researcher, and supporter who has contributed to its success over the past 41 years. Together, they have helped build a thriving professional community that continues to shape the future of aromatherapy.

We invite members, practitioners, students, and supporters worldwide to join us in celebrating this special occasion and to be part of the next chapter in the IFA's journey.
